UNIK

The UNIK initiative is part of the Danish government’s strategy to meet the opportunities and challenges of globalisation.

A pool of globalisation funds has been distributed to the Universities based on proposals. Proposals were submitted by the management of the individual Universities within areas of interest for the single University and for Danish research as a whole.

In the European and Global perspective the UNIK initiative is part of a general tendency where several countries have increased their focus on capacity building at the Universities through public funding for competition.

The allocated funding

Until now a total of DKK 480 million has been available in 2008-2009. The funds have been distributed to the Universities based on one round of proposals. The funding available has been divided into 4 large grants of approximately DKK 20 million per year for five years.

The aim of the UNIK initiative

The overall aim of the UNIK initiative is to promote world-class research at Danish Universities. UNIK funding can be awarded to basic as well as applied research and to all thematic areas. Funding is awarding excellent, dynamic and closely co-ordinated research frameworks involving interrelated research activities or sub-themes in a prospective field of research.

An International Expert Panel

An international expert panel has been established to carry out the evaluation and assessment of proposals and to monitor the granted UNIKs during their lifespan.
