Bilateral framework

In September 2007 the Chinese Minister of Science Wan Gang and his Danish collegue Helge Sander signed a bilateral agreement on research and innovation.

The agreement defines a platform for a closer cooperation in research and innovation and covers prioritised issues, where both China and Denmark will gain by an increased cooperation.

At the same time the Ministry of Science and Ministry of Foreign Affairs opened the Innovation Centre Denmark in Shanghai. The objective of this centre is to strengthen the Danish knowledge institutions’ international cooperation and to contribute to secure Danish research and innovation as world class.

Strategy for knowledge-based collaboration

A strategy was presented in February 2008. The vision behind the strategy is that the relationship between Denmark and China will develop and make the two countries close partners in the knowledge area. It must be easier for Danish and Chinese knowledge-based organisations to cooperate and exchange knowledge across our borders.

The objectives of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation’s China strategy can be summed up as follows:

  • To facilitate the access for Danish universities, business enterprises and institutions to create knowledge and innovation in cooperation with Chinese partners.
  • To increase the attraction of Chinese talents to Danish universities,
    business enterprises and institutions in both China and Denmark.
  • To increase Danish researchers’ and students’ access to and insight into Chinese educational, research and innovative environments.

The basis for collaboration focuses on the following areas, Strategy for Knowledge Based Collaboration between Denmark and China Strategy for Knowledge Based Collaboration between Denmark and China. where both countries have a strong position:

  • Environment
  • Clean energy
  • Biomedicine and life sciences
  • Nanotechnology
  • ICT (Information and Communication Technology)
  • Agriculture and food
