Prospects of the programme

The Eurostars programme was launched in 2008. The programme has been welcomed with much interest from applicants.

  • The total Eurostars budget of all EU-countries is around 6 billion DKK per year.
  • Each year around 650 applications divided on two calls are received.

Who are the Danish applicants?

  • Around 50 applications with Danish participation are received each year.
  • One third of these 50 applications have a Danish SME as the project coordinator. Most of these SMEs employ no more than 50 people.
  • 30-35 % of the applications are approved to the Eurostars programme

Danish applicants can be divided into 3 main research areas:

  • Biomedicine and Biotech: 30 %Around 30 pct. is
  • IKT (Information and communication technology): 30 %
  • Energy and environment: 10 %

What is the strength of Danish applicants?

  • A great deal of Danish SMEs are involved in the field of research and development.
  • Danish SMEs have a long tradition for cooperation with research institutions such as “Advanced Technology Groups” (GTS) and universities as well as larger companies.
  • Danish SMEs often have a wide international network.
The Eurostars programme seems almost tailormade for Danish SMEs with growth potential.

The international dimension

In addition to being a genuine SME programme, there is no doubt that the Eurostars programme promotes cooperation across European borders.

Eurostars works as an international network where several Danish companies receive unsolicited enquiries from foreign parties who have an interest in submitting a joint application. Nearly half of the project applications with Danish applicants have come into being in this way. This demonstrates that Danish SMEs and knowledge institutions are generally regarded by foreign companies as attractive partners.
